Artist Statement

I am a fiber artist who comes from a fashion background. I consciously integrate up-cycled materials, found objects and personal belongings into my art and design. As a creative leader my passion is to create a place where textile waste can be appreciated. My research led me to the importance of caring for our belongings through the practice of mending. I choose to work with textile waste so that I am not contributing to the growing problem.

I grew up in a fishing town in New Hampshire, where the idea of shopping local and investing in community was a part of everyday life. My sourcing starts from local charity shops where the garments’ next destination is the landfill. Large bins line a massive room and act as the mountains for my material excavations. When I am foraging for materials, I am intuitively using my senses of touch and sight. In the studio, I begin with dissecting, cutting, and unraveling old garments.

My work examines historic mending practices. I collage materials by layering them with hand stitching in a colorful and textural way to capture the essence of impressionistic-like brush strokes. In a modern gesture, I shift the garments meaning and purpose through fiber paintings that highlight the importance of care and preservation of our belongings.
